There are three main types: Transparent Bridges (automatically forward/block data), Source Routing Bridges (use pre-determined routes for data transmission), and Translational Bridges (connect different network types). Bridges can operate locally within a single area or remotely over a WAN, helping to manage traffic, extend network reach, and create separate collision domains.

While bridges offer benefits like increased bandwidth, protocol transparency, and network segmentation, they can be expensive and slow, with challenges like high broadcast traffic. Their functions include dividing LANs, controlling traffic, and ensuring reliable data transmission across similar protocols. Despite some limitations, bridges play a vital role in managing data flow and optimizing communication in complex networks.
